I am the Way, the Truth and the Life - John 14:6

Some time ago, I came across this "Jesus meme" that combined one of Jesus' sayings and the phonetic pronunciation of the Christian God's name, Yahweh, to make a joke that I initially found humorous. I say initially because almost immediately after laughing at the meme, several thoughts flooded my mind about what it was actually saying about Jesus. At face value, you have a debatable image of the historical person of Jesus, giving the thumbs up and making the dreaded "dad joke" about His own Father in Heaven. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized that this joke is not only an inaccurate representation of what Jesus would have done, but it is also offensive to the Christian and Jewish God. Some of the questions that came to mind were:

Where did the idea in this meme originate from?
What kind of message were they trying to relay? Would Jesus have agreed with this?
What was the point of adding Yahweh? Was it simply someone making a joke or did they actually know what the Name Yahweh stands for and how this would affect others?
Was this meme meant to be offensive to Christianity and Judaism?
Does the average person who does not know about Christianity even understand the joke? Would they know Who Yahweh is, let alone understand what the implications of using His Name in this way are?

These and many more questions came to mind, and I eventually became upset at the fact that someone might read this for a moment, laugh and move on, all at the expense of Jesus' ministry, the Gospel message, and God's reputation as the Almighty. Being a seminary student, I know that Yahweh is the self-declared sacred name for God that is revealed in the Old Testament, and is subsequently revered by both Christian and Jewish believers. I also know that as a Jew, Jesus would not dare to make such a joke because Jewish believers had strict rules about the very Name of God, and did not dare utter it in direct disobedience to His commandment (you shall not take the Lord's Name in vain - Exodus 20:7). I also know that when Jesus said He was the Way, Truth and Life in John 14:6, He was speaking of His coming crucifixion that would prove to be the remedy for humanity's ongoing problem with sin, if believers would just accept this gift of His. However, I don't think that this is common knowledge to the average person.

Therefore, if I were to encounter a non-Christian, I would attempt to pose these questions, at the risk of looking like I was over analyzing this joke. However, I think that as human beings, we should not just accept things at face value, and need to actually ask questions in relation to what information we are receiving, be it through the T.V., a song, or a simple meme. It is my hope that whoever I engage in this conversation would be open minded and willing to think about the implications of such portrayals of Jesus.
